I’ve hired hundreds of people, and these 11 interview tips will help you ace your next job interview

I’ll say it: Most candidates shoot themselves in the foot by making easy mistakes every time they walk into an interview.

Within the first 5 minutes of an interview, I already have a pretty good idea of the outcome.

In fact, a Career Builder study found that over half of hiring managers know within the first five minutes of an interview if a candidate will be hired. These 11 interview tips will help you be prepared for your next job interview.

You might think this one goes without saying, but people show up for job interviews wearing all kinds of things. Dress the part doesn't mean you need formal business attire. You need to dress appropriately.

1. Dress the Part

Seriously. You need to smile.  When you don't smile, you look tired and angry.  I promise smiling will set you apart.

2. Smile

Even if you don't write in it, carry a notebook. You'll look professional and ready to take notes. It also implies that you're organized.  It sets you apart.

3. Carry a Notebook

You need to know the job demands and who better to ask than your potential boss. Ask about specific experience the job requires and how you fit the bill.

4. Talk about job requirements

Look beyond company perks. Learn about the company. Understand its business model and leaders.  Pro tip: Memorize the mission statement.

5. Research the Company
